Tinnitus
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is the perception of sound in the ears when no external source is present. Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears, and is usually described as a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound.
The exact causes of tinnitus are unknown, but many factors can exacerbate or worsen the perception of tinnitus:
Hearing Loss
Noise exposure
Head/neck injuries
Certain medications
Wax build-up in the ear
Stress
Benign tumor of the cranial nerve
25 million Americans experience tinnitus
Tinnitus assessment includes a comprehensive hearing assessment including otoacoustic emissions, tinnitus pitch and loudness match, tinnitus questionaries and counseling.
Although there is no cure of tinnitus, many tools exist to help lessen the perception of tinnitus. If tinnitus is linked to hearing loss, hearing aids and other devices have been proven to be successful in decreasing the perception of tinnitus.
